Double Edged Injury News for the Steelers

Watt suffers torn pectoral

The Pittsburgh Steelers simultaneously took a hit and dodged a bullet in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. While reigning Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt suffered a torn pectoral muscle Sunday night and is set to undergo surgery, the injury is expected to be season-ending, potentially saving the Steelers from an even more catastrophic outcome.

Maintaining body weight

Watt, who has been known for his ability to maintain his body weight over the course of a season, was originally thought to have suffered a more severe injury. The Steelers feared that Watt had torn his bicep, which would have likely ended his season. However, the torn pectoral is expected to heal in time for Watt to return to the field in 2023.

The Steelers are now faced with the challenge of replacing Watt, who is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Watt had 22.5 sacks last season, which was second in the league. The Steelers will likely turn to Alex Highsmith, who had 6.5 sacks last season, to fill Watt's spot in the starting lineup.

The Steelers are hoping that Highsmith can step up and fill the void left by Watt. However, they know that it will be difficult to replace one of the best players in the NFL. The Steelers will need to find a way to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks without Watt if they want to be successful in 2022.
