Early Life and Career
Gavin Christopher Newsom was born on October 10, 1967, in San Francisco, California. He graduated from Santa Clara University and earned a Master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley. After working as a businessman, Newsom entered politics in 1996 when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
Mayor of San Francisco
In 2003, Newsom was elected Mayor of San Francisco. During his two terms as mayor, he gained national attention for his progressive policies on same-sex marriage, environmental protection, and affordable housing. Newsom was also instrumental in bringing the America's Cup sailing race to San Francisco in 2013.
